“What is needed, rather than running away or controlling or suppressing or any other resistance, is understanding our fear, that means, watch it, learn about it, come directly into contact with it. We are to learn about fear, not how to escape from it.”

–Jiddu Krishnamurti

As the program name and slogan hint, our focus with RSOM is wellness, empowerment, and community. We endeavor to make the benefits of yoga, widely accessible. We believe this is possible by cultivating strong and mutually meaningful relationships with community programs and initiatives throughout the city. We hope to spread our collective breadth of knowledge and experience of the principles of yoga, mindfulness, health and meditation outside of the typical studio. RSOM aims to empower people of all backgrounds and to improve their mental, physical, and emotional wellbeing.

RSOM launched its first initiative in February at the APEX Youth Center located in Central City. RSOM teachers have been instructing weekly classes that introduce yoga as a means to manage stress and encourage emotional and physical self care. RSOM’s main goal is to maintain a safe space where the youth feel comfortable and motivated to make mindful choices and look inside.

Isabel Groedel shares with us a little snap shot of her experience with the students at APEX:

“Namaste’s exchanged, I sat there quietly and gazed out at the peaceful faces, thinking about the magical power yoga has in its ability to completely transform the energy of any and every person, in any and every space. As yogis started to roll up their mats and softly move about the space, I noticed two bodies that didn’t move an inch, two bodies that stayed seated, hands at heart center, for the next 8 minutes (I kept track, more and more amazed with every passing moment). Only after I prompted them did JaQuan and Emmanuel open their eyes. I couldn’t help but let a huge cheesy smile run across my face. “How does it feel?” I asked JaQuan simply. “I’ve never felt so calm in my body, and so calm in my mind.” “Me either,” added Emmanuel, “The way I feel right now is that nobody in the world could disturb my peace.” – IG
